Once upon a time, before the Net was draped over all mankind, there were things called “Books.” This class, known as Books, often contained many, MANY words. Although the Order, “Childrens’ Books” contained pictures, many Orders contained ONLY words!
One of these very special Orders of books was the “Word Book.” The “Dictionary” is a Family in this Order. This Family’s main job is to list and define words, and provide pronunciation guides. Two Species in this Family are “The Oxford” and “The Merriam Webster.”
Another Family is the “Thesaurus.” The job of this Family is to categorize words. Peter Mark Roget spent years creating the first Thesaurus. The Species he created is very famous. You can read more about this in the link below.
So many people, today, will never know the pleasure of looking up words in a real book, as the Net has eliminated the need. Yes. It
appears that real books have gone the way of the brontosaurus. Even the Class of “Newspapers” is endangered. Some people don’t know what they are missing. Sigh...I encourage you to spend National Thesaurus Day by using a REAL - not an online - thesaurus! I have one if you want to check it out!
