CHRISTIANSBURG, VA. — Avon swimmer Joleigh Crye was a busy high school junior over the weekend as she competed with her Mercury Swim Club at the 2021 Eastern Zone Speedo Sectional Meet held at the Christiansburg Aquatics Center in Christiansburg, VA.
The multi-sectional champion who swam against the boys all winter, took on some of the nation’s elite female swimmers in her age group and came away with several medals during the three-day event.
In what was Joleigh’s first USA Swim Meet competition in over a year, Joleigh posted five top-8 finishes in all of her races.
Her 100 Breaststroke victory and second place finish in both the 50 Free and 100 Fly highlighted her meet.
In her 100 Breaststroke victory, Joleigh hit the wall with a time of 1:03.17 topping Southern Maine’s Audrey Cohen (1:04.21) for the title.
In her 50 Free race she was very close in this one as Sidney Arcella, of New Jersey, nipped her by .15 — 23.33 to 23.48 for the top spot.
In the 100 Fly, Joleigh swam a 55.52 while Georgia Colnurn, of Delaware finished with a 54.35.
In fact, Joleigh’s performance single handedly kept Mercury in the top 10 teams of the meet placing 10th out of 25 teams.
Mercury finished with 82 points, all which were accounted for by Crye.
“With the past year we have had with the pandemic, her success this past weekend was a testament to her love of the sport and passion for competition,” said Mercury Swimming and Dansville head coach Chris Everett.
Joleigh also placed fourth in the 200 IM and sixth in the 100 Free.
She swam two PR’s including her 50 Free (23.48) and 100 Free (52.40).
“I’m really happy that I was able to represent MERC at this very competitive meet,” Joleigh said. “It was great because I had the opportunity to compete against some of the fastest female swimmers on the east coast.”
