CALEDONIA — It’s been a long time coming for Cal-Mum tennis coach Brian McQuillan and his program.
On Friday night, the top-seeded Raiders moved past visiting No. 2 Oakfield-Alabama, 5-0, to earn the school’s first Section V Tennis title in school history.
“This was a tremendous season at Cal-Mum with an awesome ending for our kids,” said McQuillan. “After missing out on the spring sports season last year due to COVID-19, I’m so happy for our seniors.”
Emerson Martelle got things going for Cal-Mum with a 6-4, 6-4 win over O-A’s Preston Tobolski at first singles. At second singles, C-M’s Matt Dollard won 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 over Mason Cadieux, while freshman Lorenzo Martell defeated O-A’s Spencer Murphy at third singles, 6-0, 6-1.
The Raiders also swept the two doubles matches, with the duo of Garrett Thompson and Oliver Johnson moving past Jared Graham and Zach Missel (6-2, 6-4) and Alden Hatch and Aidan Mooney defeating Carson Warner and Shawn Tobolski (5-7, 6-3, 6-3).
Cal-Mum completes its championship season with a record of 11-2, while O-A finishes the year as runner-up with a record of 12-4.
“Oakfield played a great match and has a well-coached team,” added McQuillan. “As we expected, their kids fought really hard for every point. It was a lot closer match than the final score indicated.”
