LE ROY — It had been a long two years for Le Roy head coach Mike Battaglia and his Le Roy Lady Knights, but my, oh my, did they start the 2021 season off with a bang.

Fifth-year senior Hayley Papp fired the third no-hitter of her career to get the Knights off to a 1-0 start to the year, propelling Le Roy to an 8-0 win over Warsaw.

”It’s been a long two years, and it was great for all of us to get back on the softball field again,” said Battaglia. “Hayley picked up where she left off in 2019.”

Papp struck out 15 batters en route to her stellar performance, and added a 3-for-4, two RBI day at the plate.

The Le Roy offense took a while to get going, but jumped on the Warsaw defense in the third inning to the tune of three runs. Papp and fellow seniors Bryn Luckey and Brenna Fenstermaker scored the Knights runs in the third, while juniors Kailynn Tresco and Hailey Johnson also reached base in the frame.

Luckey knocked in an RBI for Le Roy, while Johnson added a run batted in and Felicity Wieseltier finished the game 2-for-4.

“I loved the effort tonight and am looking forward to this group getting better every time out,” added Battaglia. “We are right back at it (on Tuesday) with another tough game against Geneseo.”

Warsaw begins the season at 0-1. The Tigers look ahead to a matchup with Avon on Wednesday.
