Barbara H. Anderson

Barbara H. Anderson, 87, a lifelong and much loved resident, kindergarten teacher and volunteer of Geneseo died peacefully on Jan. 15, 2021, at the Friendly Home in Brighton.

She is predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Dr. William Anderson; parents, Edwin and Kathryn (VanAllen) Hulburt; and brother, Van Hulburt.

Barbara was born May 17, 1933, to Edwin and Kathryn Hulburt of York, N.Y.

She graduated from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1955 and married William (Bill) Anderson on March 24, 1956. Their family was started a year later. She began her 29-year teaching career first at the Geneseo Campus School and then for the Geneseo School System.

Although her family was always at the center of her life, she was passionate about her kindergarten students and passing along her gift of teaching to her countless student teachers who attended the State University College at Geneseo. Throughout her life, she embraced being recognized and catching up with former students and their parents at the grocery store, around town, or at medical and rehab facilities in later life. Their accomplishments meant the world to her and made her extremely proud.

Barbara’s life was filled with family, friends, and volunteering in the Geneseo community. She was a member and held infinite leadership positions for the Geneseo Garden Club, Genesee Valley Council on the Arts, Friends of Wadsworth Library, Association for the Preservation of Geneseo (APOG), Livingston County Historical Society, Geneseo Young at Heart, Monday Evening Class, and the Hag Hut of the Historical Aircraft Group at the National Warplane Museum. She was recognized as Town of Geneseo Senior Citizen of the Year in 2016, Friends of Wadsworth Library Volunteer of the Year in 2018, and bestowed the honor of Life Membership of Geneseo Garden Club in 2018.

Barbara loved to spend time at her lake house on Sandy Pond and later Conesus Lake, and to travel especially to the sunshine and ocean of Mexico. She was perhaps best known for always saying “yes” to needs of help as well as her delicious food and hospitality. Barbara will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.
