BUFFALO — The FBI is also now advising people to be wary of “grandparent scams” in Western New York.

Scammers call an older person claiming to be that person’s grandchild. They ask for thousands of dollars in bail money.

A short time later, a car or van arrives at the grandparent’s home. Rideshare services are sometimes used.

Those who receive such a call are advised to hang up immediately and report it the FBI at 1 (800) CALL-FBI or their local police departments.
