A field of 10 teams is set for the Lima Bed Races, a popular feature at the Lima Crossroads Festival.
The races are set for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Festival.
The festival, which includes a concert tonight and continues Saturday and Sunday, is an annual community celebration sponsored by the Village of Lima and the Lima Crossroads Council, runs through Sunday.
Proceeds from this year’s festival will benefit Mercy Flight Central and Teresa House in Geneseo.
The bed race, a quirky competition, has long been a popular draw at the Crossroads Festival.
Teams scheduled to compete, listed in alphabetical order, are, 4 Men and a Baby, Assemblywoman Byrnes, BBB, Brandon’s BBQ Ballers, CougarTech Team 2228, EBIC, Elim Life Church, Lima Fire Department, Namanya Memorial Community Library, and Shrimp Scampions.
The order of the racers will be provided the day of the race.
There are three beds of different types used in the race: the light and fast Low Rider, the Big Heavy, and the First Responder Gurney. The beds include sheets, pillow and a stuffed teddy bear.
Each team has five members. One team member rides in the bed - a helmet is recommended - while the other four people push or pull the bed. The rider must stay on the bed the entire race.
Along the course are several tasks to complete. The first leg of the race is to get to the basketball hoop as fast as possible. The bed rider then shoots baskets with five attempts. The four bed pushers must get the basketball back to the shooter off of the rebound.
The next leg of race requires the team to fill a water jug from the water trough using a bedpan. This is a timed portion and a judge will let the team know when they can proceed to the finish line.
All of the team members must get to the finish line as the entire race has a time factor as well.
