Small artworks aim to boost arts councils

Arts councils serving the four-county GLOW region are teaming up to present an exhibit that challenges artists to create or donate arts pieces measuring 4 inches by 4 inches.

The exhibition, called “GLOW Art Councils’ 4x4,” will help the three arts councils fund marketing efforts in 2021 and beyond as the arts organizations and artists emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic that largely shuttered their galleries and fundraising efforts.

The Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council, Arts Council for Wyoming County and the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts in Livingston County have issued a call for work asking artists of all different backgrounds to donate 4-inch-by-4-inch art pieces for the exhibition. There are no restrictions on the artist’s age, location or skill level.

GO ART! started the 4x4 Art Show in 2018, in part to raise marketing dollars to help raise awareness of the arts in the community.

Then came 2020 and the closure of galleries and cancellation of exhibitions and performances.

With dollars being hard to come by, GO ART!, the ACWC, and the GVCA decided to work together on their marketing efforts. As the “4x4” fundraiser was partially used for marketing originally, the directors of the arts councils decided it made sense to continue the fundraiser in that direction, but now including the entire GLOW region marketing efforts.

Artists may enter as many pieces of art as their heart desires and of any medium (2D or 3D), however they must be 4 inches by 4 inches and signed only on the back.

All artwork will be exhibited online at and be for sale to the public for $20 each, which includes shipping, if applicable. Pieces can also be picked up at the local arts council, which would provide an opportunity to check out the amazing artwork their galleries have to offer.

For the online exhibition, artist information, including artist name, the title of the piece and its format will be listed online with the piece.

All pieces are due by April 20.

Artists donating work should download and print the exhibit application from the GO ART! website. The application, available at, should be submitted with the piece.

Entries may be dropped off at GO ART!, 201 East Main St., Batavia, from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays; Genesee Valley Council on the Arts, 4 Murray HIll Drive, Mount Morris, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays; or the Arts Council for Wyoming County, 31 South Main St., Perry, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Entries may also be mailed to the ACWC, 31 South Main St., Perry, NY 14530.
