One-act play to feature General Ulysses S. Grant

Derek Maxfield as Ulysses S. Grant

WEST SPARTA – The Commanding General of the Union army, or an actor portraying him at least, will present the one act play “Grant on the Eve of Victory” next weekend at the West Sparta Town Park.

The Sept. 26 performance is centered on an informal, fire-side interview of Ulysses S. Grant by George Alfred Townsend, a correspondent for the New York World.

The fictional conversation takes place at Grant’s headquarters cabin in City point, Virginia.

In his wide-ranging conversation with Townsend, Grant talks about the military situation in March 1865, his relationship with Major General William Tecumseh Sherman and then-President Abraham Lincoln and his views of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, among many other things.

Derek Maxfield, an associate professor of history at Genesee Community College in Batavia, will portray Grant.

The performance starts at 2 p.m. Admission is free. West Sparta Town Park is at 8302 Kysorville-Byersville Road. The rain date is Oct. 3. For more information, call (585) 519-5111.
